dining area

I asked what you guys wanted to see and a lot of people requested the dining area so here we go! When we bought the house, it had a dated kitchen with dark and unmatched floors with a dining room that would not fit the amount of people that we have living here.

Before:

Ever since we bought this house, I envisioned a beautiful stone wall as the center focal point of the house with a huge table that could fit all of us plus a lot of guests for parties and holidays. The first thing we renovated were the floors. We ripped out the floor, in basically the whole house, and put in 5″ oak wood. Then stained it with Flagstone stain to give it a home-y feel and also keep it in the middle range of color – not too dark and not too light.

Next, we painted the whole first floor with Benjamin Moore – Decorators White, which is just a classic, true white since there are so many white options. We figured if we paint it white, we definitely wouldn’t get over it so we want to paint in a year.

After that, we focused on the table. We splurged on wooden table legs from Rustic9 in Texas and then my husband used extra flooring to create the 14′ herringbone tabletop and also stained it Flagstone.

On the back side of the table, we put 7 chairs and on the other side we put 2 – 7′ benches so we can see the beautiful handmade table from anywhere in the kitchen. There’s nothing that compares to a handmade piece of furniture from your husband exactly the way you want it. So sentimental.

The chairs are Christopher Knight Home Phinnaeus in Light Grey.

We added two Paladino 8-light chandeliers centered on the table. They have hooks to hang them higher up when we have parties and push the table up against the wall so nobody hits their heads on them.

I was going for a French country look, which brings me to the stone wall that I have been dreaming about. In French houses there is texture everywhere. We had a bunch of masonry companies come to give prices on a stone wall and they were all 10-15k. As you may or may not know, we spent a lot of money renovating our house top to bottom so adding a stone wall wasn’t really on the top of our list.

I had the idea to buy sheets of PVC stone that was durable, fire resistant and waterproof and then fill in the spaces with real cement. Once we got the sheets, I thought they looked very realistic, BUT if we put all of the sheets on the wall it would end up looking too repetitive like wallpaper.

So, of course, I begin cutting each and every stone… for hours and hours. Once they were put onto the wall, we could make the space in between each stone bigger than it was on the sheet. Also, all of the stones could be put on the wall in different directions instead of being so uniform.

We started with applying Liquid Nails Fiberglass adhesive in small sections and then pressing the stones in. Those dried over night and then we added the mortar mix on top of and in between each of the stones as if they were real. I added all of the products that were used here.

Funny story, I probably got the most messages about how “crazy I am” for putting PVC on the wall and when they saw the final product they felt like they needed to apologize to me for doubting me… don’t worry it was either going to be EPIC or an EPIC FAIL! Not to pat myself on the back, but I usually do come up with pretty good ideas to save money, but not skimp on the quality/look. The stone wall looks and feels like a real stone wall 100%.

BEFORE AND AFTER REEL

Lastly, I added very simple decorations of candlesticks and pillars in various sizes with wooden candle holders in between greenery.

Let me know in the comments if you think adding curtains would emphasize the beautiful stone wall or if you think it will take away from it!

I’m not sure about curtains because it looks like you have so much natural light! I would do anything for natural light in my old dusty Adams Family house lol! I guess the question is- what color curtains?
